"Wipeout" Indeed

2/13/2016

The recent RT post titled "Wipeout" needs a minor clarification. Thanks to Matt Stevens, who commented the following on RT Facebook, "Misleading. The president and trustee are two distinct positions. So if a trustee hits 6 years but has never been president, they can run for president and serve up to 6 years. The reverse is the same....."  A minor clarification is now needed.

Most important to note is the following:

In the end, if term limits are enacted, by 2018 all current Richfield Village Board members will be eliminated from office except for 1 person. Yes they all can run for Village President, but that office is open once every 2 years.

The only position that Dan Neu, Bill Collins, Sandy Voss and Rock Brandner could campaign for is Village President. John Jeffords will be totally eliminated in 2017.

Danah Zoulek a candidate for Richfield Village Trustee and Washington County Supervisor made the following comment on Richfield Today recently. "The referendum for term limits does not prevent a trustee from running for president. Anyone can run for president without being a trustee first, even now. The term limits are per office not per person. All 4 trustees can still run for president. :) "

While there is a kernel of truth in her statement, term limits by definition restrict how often a person can be in office. If term limits were about the office you might see limits to d
uties or election dates change but NO. Term limits limit how often a person can run for office.

Perhaps she did not know what she asked for when she submitted the Term Limits referendum. Did she really mean "term limits are per office not per person?" How is the office itself changed with term limits?  The only outcome of voting for the referendum is to limit the times a person can hold office.

So, Richfield residents will decide what they want for Richfield government when they vote April 5th. Do they want to allow all residents the opportunity to run for any village office and as often as they want to serve their community? Or restrict them as stated in the referendum clarification below. Take note it states, "prohibiting a person from running for office.......," and "if
it would result in their service......" Does that sound like limiting the office or the person? You decide.

CLARIFICATION statement of term limit referendum, which will be available to all on the date of election.:

A "Yes" vote on the question is in favor of the adoption of the petitioned charter ordinance, which will restrict eligibility for the Office of Village Trustee by prohibiting a person from running for the Office if it would result in their service for more than three (3) terms or for more than six (6) years, the same limitation would apply to the Office of Village President, by restricting eligibility if it would result in service more than three (3) terms or more than six (6) years in the Office of Village President.

A "No" vote on the question is opposed to the adoption of the petitioned charter ordinance, which will maintain the existing laws, which to not impose such term limits.

Village of Richfield residents, as usual, the outcome is up to you and no one else.

From a former town board member I would not vote for someone for Village president that has not been on tbe board for at least one term before they run. People who think this is a job anyone can just step in and run the Village are badly mistaking. We need people running for these jobs that have the best for Richfield in mind, not an adjenda of their own for only getting what they want.We have a board that is doing the best for all of us and should not be pushed aside because of term limits. We do not want to go with term limits and the board size is fine the way it is.
