Since the current radio system was installed, the county’s largest municipalities have complained radio signals were not adequate.
The deadline was shifted to January to give local authorities time to learn more about 700MHz technology.
VHF signals are better at covering distance, which satisfied the county’s needs, while 700MHz signals are better at penetrating buildings, experts have explained.
The county is willing to pay the $4 million-plus for infrastructure improvements to install a 700MHz radio system. But each municipality must purchase its own portable radios and any bidirectional amplifiers.
