GUNS

9/21/2013

A lighthearted story regarding a serious problem.

My Gun

Today I swung my front door wide open and placed my Remington 30.06 right in the doorway. I left 6 shells beside it, then left it alone and went about my business.

While I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the neighbor boy across the street mowed the yard, a girl walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars stopped at the stop sign near the front of our house.

After about an hour, I checked on the gun. It was still sitting there, right where I had left it. It hadn't moved itself outside. It certainly hadn't killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it had been presented to do so.

In fact, it hadn't even loaded itself.
Well, you can imagine my surprise, with all the media hype about how dangerous guns are and how they kill people.

Either the media is wrong, or I'm in possession of the laziest gun in the world.

Well, I'm off to check on my spoons. I hear they're making people fat.

Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released information about individual schools and school districts ratings on Tuesday. About 88% of Wisconsin's public schools and 95% of school districts met or exceeded expectations for the year 2012-13.

Richfield School District was in the category of districts that "significantly exceeded expectations" with a score of 83.2. 9 school districts were in this category.

Friess Lake School District was in the category of districts that "exceeded expectations" at 75.4. 134 school districts were in this category.

280 districts either met or failed to meet expectations.

Both Friess Lake and Richfield each serve about 10% low-income students.

Richfield residents can be proud of our local school districts and the impact they have on our Richfield youth.

Most everyone who was alive on 9/11 can remember where they were when they heard and saw this horrific tragedy.

Have you ever wondered how the new Ground Zero memorial in New York City was built and what technologies were used to make this new site safe for people in the future?

This video shows it all. It was shown on PBS as a NOVA production on September 11, 2013.

Richfield Art at the Mill 2013 and 2014

For all who attended the Richfield Art at the Mill this year the event was a success.

Lois Hessenauer wrote in the Richfield Historical Society newsletter the following: The Richfield Historical Park was a flurry of activity on July 28th as 67 talented artists set up their tents to display their works of art and 12 plein air artists selected scenic locations to paint.

At 9 am, people began to arrive on the people mover or walk to the exhibit area to browse and purchase items. The Silent Auction tent was filled with donations of original art work ranging from wooden bowls, paintings, glass items, yard sculptures, to rugs – plus much more.

At 1 pm, the outstanding plein air paintings were judged with the following outcome: 1st place:  Thomas Buchs, 2nd place: Kristy Sankey, 3rd place: Elizabeth Carr.  The crowd was entertained with music by Meisel Music Collective and food catered by Bilda’s Friess Lake Pub was enjoyed. Many attendees enjoyed tours of the mill, farmhouse, and log buildings that are located in the park.

Even though the day was chilly, the attendance was 1,071—a 100% increase over last year’s attendance. The number of artists increased from 28 in 2012 to 67 this year. The proceeds of Richfield Art at the Mill will go towards RHS projects, in particular the restoration of the Messer/Mayer Mill foundation.

Many Thanks to the Art Fair sponsors, Oarsman Capital and Monches Farm; exhibiting artists; plein air painters; fair attendees, and in particular, all of the RHS volunteers who made Art at the Mill a success.

Now let's talk about Richfield Art at the Mill 2014. 20 artists from this years event have agreed to return in 2014. If you are interested in participating next year email Lois at artfairrhs@gmail.com.  The 2014 event will be held July 26th, 9am to 4pm at the Richfield Historical Park.

Hope to see you there.
