The U.S.S. Laffey Battleship

4/23/2016

AHOY!  THIS IS A GREAT FILM OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING ABOARD THE SHIP!

This is a new version of the attack on U.S.S Laffey, shows some scenes taken from other films, i.e. the chaplain administering last fight on a carrier flight deck. The Laffey put up a hellacious fight and never sank.

The camera was in the gun turret under attack. It's Amazing! The U.S.S. Laffey, "the ship that would not die", was hit by 6 Kamikaze and 4 bombs, but remained afloat after an 80 minute battle.

Seaman Laffey was awarded the Medal of Honor for his stand against Confederate forces on 5 March 1864. The ship earned the nickname "The Ship That Would Not Die" for her exploits during the D-Day invasion and the battle of Okinawa when she successfully withstood a determined assault by conventional bombers and the most unrelenting kamikaze air attacks in history.

Laffey is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and is preserved as a museum ship in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, outside Charleston.

A Short Memoir

Born in the 1930s and early 40s, we exist as a very special age cohort.  We are the “last ones.”  We are the last, climbing out of the depression, who can remember the winds of war and the war itself with fathers and uncles going off.
We are the last to remember ration books for everything from sugar to shoes to stoves. We saved tin foil and poured fat into tin cans.  We saw cars up on blocks because tires weren’t available.  My mother delivered milk in a horse drawn cart.

Just came home from shopping at Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly and saw a sheriff car sitting at the north side of Hwy 175 at Hwy 167.  It was just inside the barricades. It seems strange until heard this report.

WISN reported a gas leak and residents within three-quarters of a mile of a Richfield gas leak have been evacuated while crews work to fix the leak.

Chairman Herb Tennies held court for the last day. He had served his constituents for 50 years. Congrats Herb.

Supervisor Rick Gundrum took over as County Board Chairman. Congrats Rick.

Rock Brandner was sworn in as a new County Supervisor. Congrats Rock.

Supervisor Don Kriefall explained the Washington County Board reorganized today after the April election reduced our board size from 30-26. My fellow supervisors have entrusted me to lead the Public Safety Committee as chairperson and elected me to 2nd Vice Chair of the County Board. I will do my best to continue to earn the trust of the people of Washington County and keep the county moving forward. Public Safety has always been my highest priority and I am looking forward to ensuring that the citizens of Washington County continue to receive the best services that we can provide.
 Congrats Don.

Two of our grandsons attend UW Oskhosh and are players on the Oshkosh club volleyball teams.  Recently a National Conference Tournament was held in Louisville KY and UW Oshkosh 1's team took first place.  UW Oshkosh 3's took fifth place in the nation. Each team has one of our grandsons on the team.

Here is an interesting article about UW Oshkosh Volleyball team. Here is another story about the Titans volleyball team. GO OSHKOSH.

If you have a son, daughter or grandchild who loves to play volleyball UW Oshkosh is a must to consider.
