Margaret Thatcher, RIP

4/9/2013

A Message from Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn:

Lady Thatcher, born Margaret Roberts in 1925, was one of the most important and beneficial statesmen of the twentieth century. When she came to power in 1979, her nation was held in the grip of unions that had command of the largest political party in the state.  They used that power to shut down industries and even sections of the country at will to make employment demands.  Rather than resist, the government would collude in crippling strikes.  Margaret Thatcher was elected with a promise to stop these practices, and in a series of dramatic confrontations in her first year she was successful.  She did not seek, she said, to adjust the power from labor to capital, but rather to return the government to serving the whole people and the public interest.

In 1982, she sent British forces to war against the junta in Argentina, which had invaded the Falkland Islands, a British protectorate. Britain won that war with the help of the United States and its president, her friend, Ronald Reagan.  The Falklands are in dispute between Britain and Argentina today, and the current administration in Washington is less friendly to Britain.  The people of the Falklands, whenever they are asked, still indicate in overwhelming numbers that they wish to remain as they are.

The only statue of Lady Thatcher in North America stands on the Hillsdale College campus.  She visited the campus in 1994 and spoke at college events on several occasions.  We are proud to have known her.  At our spring convocation on Thursday we will say prayers of thanksgiving for her life and service.

Richfield Plan Commission Defines Fast Food Restaurant.

4/5/2013

The Richfield Plan Commission voted Thursday to approve a change to the village’s ordinances that would ban any new fast-food restaurant in residential areas. Traditional sitdown restaurants are not affected.

The change comes after a month of debate and public hearings on the matter. A suggestion by a Richfield resident at the March Plan Commission meeting sparked this conversation. The language of the revised ordinance provides guidance to prevent fast-food restaurants from areas of the village zoned B-1, which is a “neighborhood business” classification.

“We thought it would be in the best interests of Richfield to remove that option and not allow fast food so close to residential areas,” said Assistant to the Village Administrator Jim Healy.

Fast-food restaurants are allowed in the B-2, B-3 and B-4 zones, which allow commercial properties instead of neighborhood businesses.

Before the change could be made, the Plan Commission had to agree on what “fast food” really meant.

“I was trying to think of all the restaurants I know in the village and if we are creating something we don’t want to create,” said Plan Commission Chairman James Otto.

He was focused on restaurants like Carol Ann’s Pizza. The village’s clarified definitions of fast-food establishments stipulate that fast food includes any business where “customers order food at a service counter, payment is made at the time the food and drink is received, and/or food is predominantly served in disposable containers or receptacles,” according to the newly approved ordinance.

Jim Otto noted, Carol Ann’s Pizza is an establishment where people order food at a front counter, which is delivered to them at their table. Otto also suggested adding language that would clarify the village’s position on these types of restaurants, which he felt do not fall under the fast-food category.

Even so, Carol Ann’s, or any existing Subway or McDonald’s, do not have to worry about the changes in Richfield’s ordinances.

“The creation of these ordinances wouldn’t affect any of the existing businesses in the village of Richfield,” said Healy. In essence, the existing restaurants would be grandfathered in, and the ordinance would apply only to new businesses.

How Informed Are You About USA News?

It seems Richfield's residents were informed when voting in the 2013 Spring election. Evidence - they re-elected the current Richfield Village Board.

How informed are you about the USA news.

This is a pretty good test. It sure indicates that the majority of Americans don't know what's going on.

It's astonishing that so many people (25%) got less than half right.

These results say that 80% of the (voting) public doesn't have a clue and that's pretty scary.

There are no tricks here. Just a simple test to see if you are current on your information.

Test your knowledge with 13 questions, and then be ready to shudder when you see how others did.

Richield Residents Won, Write-in’s Lose

To ignore the facts does not change the facts.
    Johan P. Prinsloo

April 3, 2013 and all is well in the Village of Richfield. The sitting board of John Jeffords, Village President, Rock Brandner and Sandy Voss Trustees won handedly over the rag tag group of write in candidates.  The honest campaign of John, Rock and Sandy won the day.  They gave the facts and residents knew the facts could speak for themselves.

The residents did not drink the kool-aid spewed at various gatherings before the election. All the contrived issues have no reality. Residents saw them as ridiculous.  As so they should.

February 16, 2010 Primary Election
Mike Shea                                   75
Dan Neu                                    194
Jeffery Klug                                121
Larry Schmitt                               186
Greg Galinski                               57 (Eliminated, supported by RCRG)

April 6, 2010 General Election
Dan Neu                                        587

Write-in candidate (GF)                     789   Less votes than in 2012
Write-in candidate (JH)                      741  Both write-in's supported by RCRG

Some people did not even know (RS) was running for President and voted him for Trustee. Were they INFORMED voters????

Take a moment to analyze the data above  and you will see the informed Richfield residents are not drinking the kool-aide.  The numbers for the write-in's continue to dwindle each year as
more and more residents begin to actually know the facts.

I must say it was funny to read an email that purports one trustee may have given a negative sign to the people standing at the entrances to voting location. Could they not see he was just waving Hello?  Did they not know he voted last Thursday?

All the angry chatter just inside the building surprised me. Comments such as, “I don’t care who you support, they are a menace and blocking the entrance.”  “He banged on my car.”  “I took his stickers, now where can I throw them away?” There seemed to be no issues about the voting process but many issues with the guys outside.

The deputy sheriff was called and remained to make sure safety for residents trying to enter to vote was assured.

Thank you to all Richfield voters who voted based on facts not rumors.
