Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Richfield, WI
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Richfield, on Hwy 175, has been holding outdoor worship all winter to serve those in the congregation who are yet uncomfortable entering the church building for the indoor worship, or who do not wish to wear a mask.
Pastor Mike Matzek, new to Shepherd of the Hills, has faithfully served this population that averages 30-40 persons each Sunday at 9:30am in the open outdoor Pavilion building. Shepherd of the Hills is likely the only church in Washington Co. hosting outdoor worship in the Wisconsin winter. It is a shorter service where people keep their coats, hats and mittens on, bring blankets, hand warmers and a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate - a type of tailgating with a higher purpose!
Outdoor worship took place on the property all summer with large crowds, and it continued into the dropping temperatures, including 62 people attending the 1 pm outdoor Christmas Eve worship in 14 degree temperatures! With the snowstorm this past Sunday, 24 persons attended (see attached photo).
